Louisiana and Warranty Issues.

Louisiana and Warranty Issues.

In mid-March, I left North Texas and headed to Louisiana. My first night on the road was spent in a Walmart parking lot in Marshall, Texas and the next day I arrived at the KOA in Scott, Louisiana to spend a few days visiting another of my RVillage friends, Suzy. She is a nurse, living full-time in her RV at this campground while renting her house. She’s hoping to retire soon and have more freedom to travel. My site at…

Wintering in Texas Vol. 2

Wintering in Texas Vol. 2

AUSTIN On January 14, 2019, I left Sherman, TX and headed south to Austin, the state capitol. Just as I was passing through Dallas on I-635, a small car cut me off in an attempt to jump ahead of the long line of cars to my right waiting to exit onto I-30. Unfortunately, there was no room for him to squeeze in so he stopped right in front of me. I slammed on my brakes—braking is not easy in a…

Wintering in Texas Vol. 1

Wintering in Texas Vol. 1

Originally, I planned to go to Oklahoma for a month after the October RVillage Rally in Arkansas but my daughter, Michelle, informed me she would be traveling to Houston on business in late November so I changed my plans and went to Texas earlier than scheduled. As it turned out, Mark flew out to visit his sister in Northeast Texas the same week I was moving into the state so I stopped in Sherman, TX for a couple weeks at…

Illinois to Arkansas

Illinois to Arkansas

ILLINOIS In late September, I arrived at the home of friends Nancy and Rick in Rossville, Illinois. We first met in 2014 on a lighthouse photography workshop in Maine. Since then, we’ve attended several more workshops and become good friends. They recently built a new home on 11 acres in the heart of the corn belt of the Midwest and had their electrician install a 30 amp electric hookup just so I could come park in their yard from time-to-time….

Westward bound

Westward bound

After a wonderful summer with Mark, my family, and friends, it was time to get moving again. I’d spent the first 15 months on the road traveling up and down the Eastern U.S. Now that summer was over, it was time to head west. PENNSYLVANIA First stop was Western Pennsylvania to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater house. I spent a week at Benner’s Meadow Run Campground in Farmington, PA. I turned off US-40 onto the local road to the campground…

Summer at the Jersey Shore

Summer at the Jersey Shore

Every time I visit New Jersey, I say I’m not coming back and yet, here I was again. This time I had a really wonderful reason for a two-month stay. His name is Mark. We’ve known each other for several years but our relationship didn’t really blossom until last spring. Having a strong friendship as a base, our relationship has grown quickly and, considering my vagabond lifestyle, I wanted to spend a significant amount of time with him to see…

Gettysburg and the Flight 93 Memorial

Gettysburg and the Flight 93 Memorial

By late June, I made my way to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and was on the last stretch of my travels before returning to the Jersey Shore for the summer. I stayed at Granite Hill Camping Resort for its close proximity to downtown Gettysburg and the battlefields. My phone worked here but there was no TV or WiFi, as usual, and I was truly glad that I have satellite radio and my personal hot spot to keep me entertained and connected. I…

The back woods of Kentucky and West Virginia

The back woods of Kentucky and West Virginia

KENTUCKY By mid-June, I had made my way into the mountains of Eastern Kentucky and spent a week at Daniel Boone National Forest. The campground is located on Cave Run Lake, although I couldn’t see it from my site due to the thick forest. There was a bathing beach nearby that offered nice views of the lake. My campsite at Daniel Boone National Forest. The campsites are tucked into the trees, providing plenty of privacy between neighboring sites. Kentucky countryside….

Moving inland to Alabama and Tennessee

Moving inland to Alabama and Tennessee

At the end of May, I finally left Florida and headed north into Alabama. I spent several days at Talladega National Forest, which proved to be one of my favorite locations to date. It wasn’t glamorous or fancy, in fact, it didn’t even have sewer hookups. It was just a site in woods under the tallest trees I’ve seen outside the California redwoods that dropped the largest pine cones I’ve ever seen. All this for only $9 a day with…

Florida’s Panhandle

Florida’s Panhandle

I’m so glad I got to the Florida panhandle when I did—just four months before Hurricane Michael would devastate the coastal towns and beaches I enjoyed so much. I split my week on the panhandle between two locations: the Apalachicola area and the Pensacola area. First stop was a waterfront site at Presnell’s Bayside Marina & RV Resort in Port St. Joe. From this location I was able to visit some beautiful state park beaches and several lighthouses. My waterfront…
