Lighthouses of Lake Ontario
From my home base in the Finger Lakes last October, I was able to make several day trips north to the shores of Lake Ontario to photograph lighthouses.
Salmon River Lighthouse
Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse (Oswego River)
Oswego Lighthouse sits at the end of a 1.3 mile-long breakwater. I was willing to walk all the way out to it but I didn’t get very far before I was confronted by an obstacle too high to surmount. The only way over this rise is on the right hand side but the rock is about four feet higher than where I was standing and these short legs of mine weren’t up to the task.
My insurmountable obstacle on the breakwater.

Braddock Point Lighthouse is privately owned and is operated as a Bed & Breakfast. On the day I was there, a film crew from HGTV was there filming a segment for the show, “You Live in What?” It was both a blessing and a curse. The blessing was that if they hadn’t been there, the gate would have been locked and I wouldn’t have gotten to photograph it. The curse was that they were in the way most of the time: flying a drone, moving gear out of the house, and sitting on the driveway directly between me and the house. All I could do was stand around patiently waiting for them to leave and when they did, I told them I live in a motorhome and asked if they wanted to do a show about me? They said “No.” Damn! I guess I’m not as special as I thought.
I also met the property owners who were very nice and allowed me whatever time I needed to photograph the lighthouse after the film crew packed up and left.

Film crew spent most of their time in my camera view so I had to wait for them to leave before getting my shots.
Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse can be found within Golden Hill State Park, which also operates a campground at the same location. This would be an awesome place to stay with my motorhome!

What a great view from campsite #12 at Golden Hill State Park!
Fort Niagra Lighthouse is located at the fort (surprising!) at the mouth of the Niagra River. The Niagra River runs north from Lake Erie and over Niagra Falls on its way to Lake Ontario. The falls are only a few miles from this location and I’ll cover my visit there in a future blog post.

While at the fort, I was able to see two small additional lighthouses on the Canada side of the river in the town of Niagra-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
